Dryer Vent Cleaning: Preventing Dryer Fires

Lint buildup causes nearly 15,000 dryer fires per year. A simple cleaning kit — used once a year — could prevent one in your home.

← Back to Home Safety Guide

Clothes dryers are one of the leading causes of home fires in the United States. The culprit is almost always the same: lint buildup inside the dryer vent. Lint is highly flammable, and a clogged vent traps heat until ignition. The NFPA reports approximately 15,000 dryer fires per year — nearly all preventable with regular vent cleaning.

By the numbers: Failure to clean the dryer is the leading cause of dryer fires, cited in 34% of incidents. The peak months for dryer fires are January, February, and March — when laundry use is highest.

Why It Matters

Warning Signs Your Vent Needs Cleaning

Clothes take more than one full cycle to dry completely. The dryer feels unusually hot to the touch during or after a cycle. You notice a burning smell during operation. The exterior vent flap doesn't open properly when the dryer is running. It's been more than a year since the last cleaning. Any of these signals warrant immediate attention.

How to Clean a Dryer Vent

Disconnect the dryer from the wall and pull it away from the vent. Attach the flexible brush kit to a standard drill (counter-clockwise rotation). Feed the brush through the vent from both the dryer connection and the exterior vent cap. Work the brush back and forth to dislodge lint. Vacuum up all loosened lint from both ends before reconnecting.

Cleaning Frequency

Clean the exterior vent cap screen monthly — debris and bird nests block airflow quickly. Clean the full vent run at least once per year, or more often if you do large amounts of laundry. Homes with a dryer vent run longer than 20 feet should clean twice yearly.

DIY vs Professional

DIY cleaning kits work well for most homes with straight or gently curved vent runs under 25 feet. Vent runs with multiple 90° elbows or runs over 25 feet benefit from a professional dryer vent cleaning service annually — the cost is typically $80–$150 and well worth it.
